Healthy knees are required for everything from walking, climbing stairs, or picking up something from the floor. If you’re an athlete, you depend on your knees even more to push yourself to run and play. Knee pain can quickly stop you in your tracks and keep you from the activities you love. In honor of Men’s Health Month, our physical therapist in hauppauge ny at The Physical Therapy Experience would like to discuss why men experience knee pain and how we can help. Why Do Men’s Knees Hurt?

The knee is a large and complex joint formed by the patella, tibia, and femur. Several structures in the knee help stabilize and move the joint. Since the knee serves as a significant weight-bearing function, it’s easy to stress your joint to the point of pain. Years of poor body mechanics can wear down the cartilage in the knee, and sudden jumping, twisting, or cutting movements can lead to torn ligaments. Some of the common reasons for men’s knee pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis – Osteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis in men that comes on gradually and worsens with age. Pain, swelling, and stiffness are all common symptoms of this condition.
  • Joint Deterioration – The cartilage in the knees absorbs shock as you move. Age and certain injuries can wear down the cartilage and cause the bones to rub together. Symptoms typically include pain, locking of the knee joint, and difficulty walking.
  • Weight – Unfortunately, the more you weigh, the harder it is on your knees.
  • Tendinitis – The tendons surrounding the knee are susceptible to tendonitis, which is the inflammation of these tendons. This is often caused by sports activities where the tendon is overused, stretched, and becomes inflamed.

Regardless of the cause of your knee pain, it’s important to avoid pushing through pain. Many men avoid treatments, which ultimately prolongs recovery and leads to even more pain. Our team at The Physical Therapy Experience will evaluate the source of your knee pain and outline an effective treatment program to relieve your symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.
