Trigger Point Therapy In Oceanside
November 3, 2017
Everyone suffers from headaches in their lifetime, whether it be migraines, sinus headaches,  tension headaches, or cluster headaches. But what most people don’t know is that headaches can have underlying causes such as musculoskeletal issues. At Physical Therapy in Smithtown and Oceanside, headaches are one of the many conditions that are treated. Different therapies are offered for the different kinds of headaches including exercises to loosen the muscles that can be contributing to headaches, medication, or a combination of both.

The therapists at PT Experience in Smithtown and Oceanside will ask patients a variety of questions and perform tests to determine what areas need to be worked on to improve the patient’s symptoms.

Tension Headache Treatments:
One of the most common headaches that are connected to the musculoskeletal system are tension headaches. The physical therapists will work on two key factors to help alleviate symptoms associated with tension headaches.

  • Improve neck stability: the therapists will use a method called manual therapy. This will help the patient have increased movement in their neck and back.
  • Strength Improvement: the therapists will work on strengthening and stabilizing the core and back muscles so the patient will have better posture. This will prevent patients from slouching and hunching forward which puts added strain on the back and neck.

Migraine Headache Treatments:
For patients who suffer from migraine headaches different therapy options can be used to help relieve symptoms including:

  • Passive therapy such as heat and ice treatments, massages, steroids, or using a form of low electrical current called TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation).
  • Active therapy including stretches and exercises to strengthen the muscles in the neck and loosen any tension.

Sinus Headache Treatments:
For patients who suffer from sinus headaches, there are different types of physical therapy that can be used to alleviate the symptoms. This includes simple stretches of the neck which help improve circulation and relieves any inflammation in the sinus cavity.

At Physical Therapy Experience in Smithtown and Oceanside, a combination of any of these treatments may be used to treat patients that suffer from chronic headache conditions in cases where traditional medication isn’t enough. Come see us today!
